Becky began her course in September 2008 and at that point had no plans to start up a business. It wasn't until November 2009 when the opportunity to be part of the Enterprise Inc. initiative arose that Becky began working on the fitness business idea. In February 2010 the business started to take shape and in June of that year onesixeight: fitness began trading. The past year has been a challenge for Becky, she says; "At times I wanted to quit my degree and at times I wanted to wind up the business because each needed more of my time and I don't like giving less than 100% to things. Now I can look back on those moments and feel proud of myself for not quiting."
The course provided valuable expertise that have helped in the making and running of onesixeight: fitness for example modules in Marketing, Accounting and Strategic Management, all of which Becky gained high grades in. Becky believes that being at Loughborough University has also opened doors for her that might not have necessarily been opened elsewhere: "It was always my dream to come to Loughborough... Not all universitys provide the support I got when starting up the business. I receive ongoing support from the Enterprise Office and I have many contacts in the University that I wouldn't have found otherwise."
Becky will continue to live in the Loughborough area now she has graduated in order to continue working on onesixeight: fitness and helping people get fit in the run up to the Olympics. Becky hopes to be involved this time next year when Team GB and Japan are based on the University campus: "I would like to offer my services to any athletes who may be struggling with an injury in the run up to the Olympics and need a low impact form of exercise for rehabilitation. Mini-trampoline exercise is fantastic for athletes as it provides a cardiovascular workout but with 87% less impact than performing the same exercise on the floor."
In the mean time, Becky will continue to work towards her Fitness 10,000 goal of helping 10,000 people get fit by the time of the Olympics. "I'm probably about a third of the way towards the target... I think I best get bouncing!"
